This is a group for parents and families of children with PDA and adults with PDA from Canada. PDA - support for caregivers of teens with PDA RECOMMENDED of the Global group , and set up to provide support targeted specifically towards the problems that affect our older children. My first suggestion to anyone who is not sure if their child, or a child they work with, could be diagnosed with PDA, is to complete the EDA-Q (Extreme Demand Avoidance questionnaire) which can be found on the PDA Society website. It's not a diagnostic tool but it is a good starting point to understanding more. Currently, there are no questionnaire instruments available to aid consistency in description. This study reports the development and preliminary validation of the ‘Extreme Demand Avoidance Questionnaire’ (EDA‐Q), designed to quantify PDA traits based on parent‐reported information. The PDA Society’s current understanding is that PDA is not a diagnosis in its own right, however the PDA profile can be identified during an autism assessment and that formulations such as ‘Autism with a PDA profile’ or ‘ASD with demand avoidant traits’ or similar can be, and are being, used. The ‘Extreme Demand Avoidance Questionnaire’ (EDA-Q) is a measure designed to quantify traits of extreme/‘pathological’ demand avoidance in children aged 5-17, on the basis of parent or teacher-report. The questionnaire was developed to ensure that PDA traits were being measured in a consistent way for research purposes. Data from the EDA-Q study also showed that whilst those children who are reported to have PDA scored significantly higher than comparison groups on the EDA-Q total score, a large proportion of those with autism plus behaviour problems (but who had not been identified as having PDA) also scored relatively high.
